A collection of Paper Textiles directly inspired by the historic ‘Wrapping Cloth’ textiles from North Korea. They are beautiful cloths made from colourful transparent silks and gauzes. All are functional pieces suitable for swaddling a baby; carrying fruits and goods to and from market; protection from the sun; and bedding for sleeping and dreaming.
My response is a collection of decorative pieces using similar techniques, arousing the senses to ideas and images.
They are constructed from single sheets of tissue paper that have been painted with oil paints, making them colourful and light fast. Similarly, I use functional hand and machine stitching.
Knots and stitches hold the overlapping papers together, providing new colours, textures and interest.
