Drawings made on regular trips to the Northumbrian Coast developed into detailed bird drawings and responses to the ever changing seascapes and sandbanks close to Lindisfarne. Walking, striding, singing, looking and stopping; experiencing the smells and sounds of the beach is inspirational. How amazing to be startled and constantly delighted by the uplift of flocks of sea birds as they whirl into the elements. This expansive environment can only enrich the soul. The Somerset coastline has revealed equally interesting resource material.
The wonder of flight is the inspiration for these paper textiles. Pieces refer directly to drawings made in sketchbooks using pencils, charcoal and ink pens. Capturing the spirit, freedom and movement of birds in flight, as they soar and flock together in the elements, over both sea and land.
Traditional embroidery techniques are worked and pushed to their extremes in order for these constructions to include drawings, revealing the liberation and joy of seabirds. Paper cut-outs, which include graphite, printed and painted marks, are trapped within layers of tissue paper with machine embroidery.
