Carole Bury – Garden Drawings and Pleated Paper Textiles
‘In the Making’ features artists who are pushing boundaries with the making of their artwork. Art is a long time in the making. It is not just the finished piece that we see before us, but the journey up to that point; the learning and experimenting; the trying and failing…This exhibition celebrates both the journey and the outcome.
1 – 31 May 2022 Painswick Rococo Garden. GL6 6TH, Garden Drawings and Paper Textiles
Carole Bury’s drawings are a celebration of this lovely Rococo Garden in Gloucestershire.
During September and October 2021 Carole was the Artist in Residence at Rococo Garden, as part of Cheltenham Open Studios. This Exhibition illustrates that particular time of the year in late summer. Days filled with summer warmth and heading towards cooler mornings, and yet the flower borders are still bursting with colour.
The skeletons of the trees are becoming slightly more noticeable. Drawing outdoors on rainy days makes everything muted and out of focus. Sketching on bright sunny days gives plenty of interesting shadows. It’s a time for parties and celebrations, for harvesting the apples from the Heritage Orchard, picking and pressing the grapes, planting banks with new spring bulbs, preparing the bee hives for Winter, protecting the Garden from forthcoming storms.
The garden is lyrical and fruitful; a period of six weeks in the Garden’s year.
The drawings are a reminder of conversations, companionable walks and revelations as snaking pathways lead from area to area (or room to room). There are secret corners, plans being made, secrets exchanged, whispering and eavesdropping. The garden holds them all secure, and safely framed by beautiful trees.
Pleated paper textiles refer to the structure of the garden beds, reflecting slow, evolving growth, preparing for the arrival of Spring. They are constructed from lightweight papers, contain pen and pencil marks, pleats, cotton and silk threads, all quietly charting the progress.
